Hando Neo: Nirvana on Earth
The Cyberpunk city is a fictional urban area in which technological advances have created a society based on information and advanced technology. This information-based society may be characterized by the dominance of computers and high-tech machinery, a lack of sunlight or natural resources, pollution, advanced health care and medicine but with low life expectancy, strong governmental control over people’s behavior through monitoring devices such as cameras, facial recognition software to detect any deviant behavior and to monitor citizens for compliance with laws. The environment around the city can be described as an underdeveloped world where poverty is widespread; there are no jobs or wealth to speak of except those related to cybernetics or high technology. Life has become cheap so that even minor offenses against the law result in immediate confiscation of property without trial and execution.
Cyberpunk cities often feature skyscraper towers that reach hundreds of stories into the air (some even higher), often linked via cable car or monorail systems. These buildings are typically multi-leveled structures that house businesses and government agencies alike while providing housing options for lower class citizens – apartments come complete with climate control, computer terminals, entertainment centers etc., all controlled by sophisticated AIThe city is a major setting of the cyberpunk genre. Cyberpunk cities are often portrayed as being dark, dirty, and run down looking. The city is where most of the action takes place because it determines who lives or dies and this affects what jobs people have for example in ‘Neuromancer’ by Gibson there is a scene where Case walks into a club called ‘The Dome’ which has been taken over by an arms dealer named ‘Salter’ he then meets up with his boss ‘Wintermute’ to discuss their next mission case tells Wintermute that they could rob banks but she replies:
You want to rob banks? You want to be caught? That will be your first job. But if you do well on your next one – I can help you get rich doing something else. What about shopping malls? Shopping malls are cool now, huh? They got all those neat virtual reality things in them: amusement arcades, souvenir shops, fashion boutiques… Lots of money around those places. And we can hit them all at once! We can walk away with millions in cash! All we need is some hardware
Cyberpunk cities are also portrayed as being very diverse and therefore people have a lot of options when it comes to where they wish to live. In ‘Neuromancer’ by Gibson, the character Case has several identities he is known as: ‘Spinner’, ‘Djinn-Master’, and most commonly just ‘Case’ throughout the book. This shows that there are so many different types of people in the city and that everyone is able to find their niche. Cyberpunk cities tend to look very futuristic because technology has advanced so much at this point that buildings can be made out of plastic or metal making them lighter than concrete or wood buildings would normally be built from. There are also flying cars around…
We are the future.
